Want More? Ask God!
He wants to give you the desires of your Heart
Psalm 37:4
Recently I read God’s response to King David’s adulterous affair that ended in murder. Nathan, the prophet of the Lord, said to David, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. The next thing the Prophet Nathan says gives me the confidence to ask Father God for “More.” Nathan says, “And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more” (2 Samuel 12:7-8)! Stop, think about that for a moment! After everything God had given David, He said I would’ve given you more!
Father God Speaks by His Scriptures!
This morning during meditation and prayer, I began to ask Father God for more, and when I did immediately, I heard 1 Samuel and started reading chapter one. When I got to verse 5, I saw how Hannah received a double portion, although the Lord had closed her womb. Hannah means grace, and Elkanah means God has purchased. Although she could not bear children, her husband loved her.
Elkanah and Hannah Fellowship in Shiloh-peace!
Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh (1 Samuel 1:6-8). Hannah’s heart was heavy for being provoked by her rival, scripture doesn’t say who her adversary was, but it could be assumed it was Elkanah’s other wife (1 Samuel 1:4). When she went up to the house of the Lord, that she was aroused to tears and loss of appetite. Elkanah said to Hannah, “why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?
More Challenges for Hannah
Hannah is heartbroken, and her husband offers her his consolation by saying, “Am I not better than ten sons?” So, she arose and went to the tabernacle of the Lord with the bitterness of soul and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish in silence. She made a vow to the Lord, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant and remember me, and give me a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head (1 Samuel 1:9-12).” Eli, the priest, judged Hannah as drunk after watching her pray.
Hannah, a Woman of Hope!
But Hannah prayed to the Lord and vowed to Him as her heart was heavy over her childless state, and to add insult to injury, now the priest at the tabernacle is accusing her of being drunk and wicked because he couldn’t hear her words as she was praying. This lady had a challenging time. She has a rival at home and a priest who doesn’t see her favorably, but she has a husband who loves her and offers a double portion for her (1 Samuel 1:5).
All things Are Working for Hannah!
God blesses her! After Hannah answered Eli, the priest, she said, “No, my Lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink but have poured out my soul before the Lord. Don’t consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken until now (1 Samuel 1:16).” Hannah seems to have more against her than for her; her name represents grace, and her husband symbolizes God, and he has purchased by offering a double portion for her.
When You Loan to God, He Overpays!
Eli said to Hannah, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him (1 Samuel1:17).” God granted the request of Hannah she bore a son and called him Samuel; he served before the Lord even as a child, wearing a linen ephod (1 Samuel 2:18). When Samuel’s parents Hannah and Elkanah went to the tabernacle for the yearly offering, Eli blessed them saying, “The Lord give you descendants from this woman for the loan that was given to the Lord and the Lord visited Hannah so that she bore three sons and two daughters.
God Gives the Uncommon!
The child Samuel grew in stature and favor both with the Lord and men. Samuel was a miracle child and served God and the Nation of Israel all his life. He anointed the first two kings of Israel: Saul and David. The Lord blessed Hannah with an uncommon male child, and the Lord didn’t stop there. He gave her several other children.
Beloved,
Do you want more out of life? Ask God! He wants to give more than you ask! He has given you Jesus, who is more significant than a double portion. He is God’s grace that purchased your position in righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). As Father God gave generously to King David and Hannah, He wants to do the same for you! Remember He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
