The story of David & Goliath

David and Goliath is a story I’ve often heard attending church. However, I never heard it in a typology form where David is a type of Jesus Christ. When David went to the Valley of Elah, and there was this giant yelling insults at the armies of Israel, David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “what shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and take away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 1 Sam. 17:26. This morning as I envision David, a small boy standing against a giant. I saw Jesus, my Lord and savior, removing my reproaches. What David did for Israel Jesus did for me, a believer- a child of the highest!

Imagine with me for a moment Goliath was a huge man yelling insults to the armies of Israel, and they were afraid. As a believer, I can see this scene in my life. The spiritual place I lived in before knowing Jesus was similar to the valley of Elah. Although I wasn’t aware I was in a war, I was very acquainted with the feeling of condemnation and fear. I often heard words of rejection, denying any love place. The giant in my valley was my thoughts. My internal dialogue was always of defeatism, “You are so stupid; why would you let them do that to you?” You deserve these consequences! But that’s not what the Bible says.

Jesus Christ bore it all!

God so loved that He gave His only begotten son, John 3:16. Christ died for the ungodly, Rom. 5:6. But this one Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, Heb. 10:12. As He is, so are we in this world, 1 John 4:17. Christ suffered once for sins; the just for the unjust that He might bring us to God, 1 Peter 3:18. Jesus has surely borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed Isa. 53:4-5. We are healed! The Bible doesn’t say how the making of our sorrows or miseries came to be. It just says He has borne our sorrows and griefs. Jesus paid the cost for my sins.

Jesus benefits versus David’s benefits

There is no comparison between the temporary versus the eternal. When David killed Goliath, there were benefits. The king promised to make him rich, give him his daughter in marriage, and his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel, 1 Sam. 17:25. Not only did David benefit, but also his family. The advantages of the New Testament believer far out-weights the enjoyment David received. As a believer, when we accept Jesus Christ, we get all that he is! See, grace is greater than the law. David had the law; we have grace. When Jesus (the grace of God) came to earth, he came to restore. What disobedience caused Rom.5:19. That we may come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in time of need, Heb. 4:16. Just a few of the many benefits! Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly, John 10:10. There is no abundance in dwelling on your past mistakes or situations you have no control over; God never intended for our experiences to replace the Holy Spirit’s leading. Our position in Christ Jesus is permanent as it is based on His blood. The benefits David received were mostly for his time; ours is for eternity! Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry since He is also meditator of a better covenant established on better promises, Heb. 8:6. As He is, so are we in this world, I John 4:17. As Jesus is prosperous, so am I! As Jesus is healthy physically, emotionally, and mentally, so are you! He never stops being my savior. The day came that King David died. But Jesus died and rose again! God saw you and me worth the blood of Jesus! That’s how He sees us, His creation.

God loves you! Jesus died for you!
