Jesus Says, Return To Your First Love
In Revelations, chapter 2, Jesus says to return to your first love. He said, I have this against you that you have left your first love and remember where you have fallen; repent and do the first works. The first works? Man fell in the Garden of Eden when he looked to himself. I venture to say our first love isn’t something that we have for God, but what God has for us. From the beginning, the Lord God fellowshipped with man. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. They were familiar with this time with the Lord. Think about that for a minute. “They heard God walking!” Wait a minute, the term heard is past tense, which implies they ignored Him. Then He called out to Adam, “Where are you?” Now you know He knew where they were. Adam and his wife hid from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden (Gen. 3:8). We can’t hide from the Lord, but to think that we can is a consequence of sin consciousness. The relationship that the first man was created into is difficult to describe by mere words. Just imagine a relationship with someone of infinite power I’m talking about beyond your imagination. How limiting it is to see a plain without end and think that’s an infinite distance, but it’s not because it’s contingent upon your limited idea or vision of a place without boundaries. Man doesn’t know a place without end unless he knows Jesus and follows Him.
Not A Good Idea!
Eating from a tree that I may know good and evil? It appears to be a good idea you’ll be wise, complete and it looks good. At that moment, that decision changed existence. So, let’s get this right! Adam and Eve had conversations with the Lord God regularly. He would come to visit them. But they decided to listen to a stranger that lied to them. They traded the infinite for the temporary. What makes sin attractive in a moment? Immediate gratification! It looks and sounds good to the eyes, ears, and soul, or so we think! We say, “I’ll be smarter after eating from this tree.” Or “I’m smart enough to make this decision; God gave me a brain!” Yes, He did, but not to be independent of Him. He wants to be a part of your whole life. But Adam and Eve said, never mind what the Lord God said about not eating from the tree in the middle of the garden (Gen. 3:3). Question: Out of all the lushness of the Garden of Eden, why did that tree become such a temptation? Was it being told not to eat of it by God the greater temptation? Or was it the power of suggestion by Satan that caused her to think (Gen. 3:6)? Whichever it was, the flesh gains dominance, causing death. Why was it so important to have her eyes open and be like God, knowing good and evil? I venture to say for the same reason; we want to rely on ourselves today. We give place to the temporary ourselves and forgoing the finite Lord.
Look To Jesus, Not Your Works Or, Labor!
Jesus is saying, return to me, fellowship with Me in the cool of the day, talk to Me! Not in a legalistic term of in the cool of the day, but throughout the day. It’s not too much, and it’s not hard because we have the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul said, by the Holy Spirit, “For He, Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you (Heb. 13:5-6). So, we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper.” That’s so much better than the visits in the cool of the day in the Garden of Eden! Pray, in your heavenly language, perfect prayers unto the Father anytime, anywhere!
God loves you!
